It was actively developed for multiple years while being in early access, fully releasing in 2017. For those who don't know, Overgrowth describes itself as a parkour fighter. Which finally brings me to the title of my post, Overgrowth. If it can't compete with the Isaacs or the Undertales or the Hotline Maimis, then sooner or later it'll inevitably be forgotten by the majority of people. If your game isn't the next indie darling or has a long average playtime or any sort of mainstream appeal, then it too is doomed from the start. However, it's just as likely that it's the very nature of these small indie titles which seal their fate. On one hand, they could just be extremely shallow experiences, doomed by design to only be there to entertain for a few hours at most, generate some buzz and pocket some cash. The reason these games fade into obscurity is also debatable. All games that revolve around a single concept, all of them rarely spoken of or even remembered by most today. io games that flooded the internet a few years ago. Think along the lines of Passpartout: The Starving Artist, Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator or any number of the. They're never very complex or varied games, rather the developers seem to take a single concept and refine it to the point where they could structure an entire experience around it. Secondly, they all seem to revolve around a single novel idea or gimmick. Whether or not these games were developed with the express intent of having them be played by big YouTubers is debatable (and I'd like to assume the majority of them aren't). yet are all connected by two things.įirstly, they become inexplicably popular online (mostly through YouTube) seemingly overnight, leading to a relatively large spike in their sales and community before rapidly fading from memory just as fast as it came. These are games that may be completely different from one another in terms of genre, feel, gameplay etc. So I've recently finished playing through all of Overgrowth's base content and played around with some of it's more popular mods, and it's got me thinking about a certain type of game that I've not given much thought to until just now.
